Environmental Design Phase 3

Container as content

In my understanding" Container as content" ,use the container to deliver the message to everyone. Example as lecturer given to us don't make the out look of bottle to be empty, so put the lable on it and put some infomation deliver to the audience.

if it is a bottle without label, It is a container without content, then the audience will not know the brand and what liquid inside

this is a bottle as well, if without content maybe people will think that it just a mineral water

Feng Shui

As I know feng shui ( 风水) literally translates as "wind-water" in English. This is a cultural shorthand taken from the following passage of the Zangshu (Book of Burial) by Guo Pu of the Jin Dynasty

According to the Wikipedia,
The history of feng shui covers 3,500+ year before the invention of the magnetic compass. It originated in Chinese astronomy. Some current techniques can be traced to Neolithic China, while others were added later (most notably the Han dynasty, the Tang, the Song, and the Ming)

The astronomical history of feng shui is evident in the development of instruments and techniques. According to the Zhouli the original feng shui instrument may have been a gnomon. Chinese used circumpolar stars to determine the north-south axis of settlements. This technique explains why Shang palaces at Xiaotun lie 10° east of due north. In some cases, as Paul Wheatley observed, they bisected the angle between the directions of the rising and setting sun to find north. This technique provided the more precise alignments of the Shang walls at Yanshi and Zhengzhou. Rituals for using a feng shui instrument required a diviner to examine current sky phenomena to set the device and adjust their position in relation to the device.

The magnetic compass was invented for feng shui and has been in use since its invention. Traditional feng shui instrumentation consists of the Luopan or the earlier south-pointing spoon (指南針 zhinan zhen)—though a conventional compass could suffice if one understood the differences. A feng shui ruler (a later invention) may also be employed.

Nowaday, feng shui is practiced not only by the Chinese, but also by Westerners. However, with the passage of time and feng shui's popularization in the West, much of the knowledge behind it has been lost in translation, not paid proper attention to, frowned upon, or scorned.

Water for Elephant

Water for Elephants is a 2011 American romantic drama film based on Sara Gruen's novel of the same name, directed by Francis Lawrence, from a screenplay by Richard LaGravenese. It stars Reese Witherspoon as Marlena Rosenbluth, Robert Pattinson as Jacob Jankowski and Christoph Waltz as August Rosenbluth

As the memories begin, Jacob Jankowski is twenty-three years old and preparing for his final exams as a Cornell University veterinary student when he receives the news that his parents were killed in a car accident. In the dark of night, he jumps on a train only to learn it is a circustrain belonging to The Benzini Brothers Most Spectacular Show on Earth. When the owner of the circus, Uncle Al, learns of his training as a vet, he is hired to care for the circus animals.

but now we not going to talk about the whole story of this movie, because this is "Environmental" Design, not "Movie" Design. The thing I would like to share is the screen that the Jacob start the first day job in Benzini Bother, and all the workers of Benzini Bother are building the booth of the show. They only use 1 day to build the booth, and they build without any machine all manpower. woah.. amazing.. and the booth they build can consider as stable. Compare with now, maybe we will think it is stupid without using machine. Ya perhaps, but we also have to admireto them who work without machine.

Landscape Architecture

Landscape architecture is outdoor and public spaces design to achieve environmental, socio-behavioral, and/or aesthetic outcomes. It included the systematic investigation of existing social, ecological, and geological conditions and processes in the landscape, and the design of interventions that will produce the desired outcome. The scope of the profession includes: urban design; site planning; town or urban planning; environmental restoration; parks and recreation planning; visual resource management; green infrastructure planning and provision; and private estate and residence landscape master planning and design; all at varying scales of design, planning and management. A practitioner in the profession of landscape architecture is called a landscape architect. The activities of a landscape architect can range from the creation of public parks and parkways to site planning for campuses and corporate office parks, from the design of residential estates to the design of civil infrastructure and the management of large wilderness areas or reclamation of degraded landscapes such as mines or landfills.

Murphy's Law

Murphy's Law is from Edwards Air Force Base in 1949 at North Base. It was named after Capt. Edward A. Murphy, an engineer working on Air Force Project MX981, designed to see how much sudden deceleration a person can stand in a crash.

One day, after finding that a transducer was wired wrong, he cursed the technician responsible and said, "If there is any way to do it wrong, he'll find it." The contractor's project manager kept a list of "laws" and added this one, which he called Murphy's Law.

Actually, what he did was take an old law that had been around for years in a more basic form and give it a name. Shortly afterwards, the Air Force doctor (Dr. John Paul Stapp) who rode a sled on the deceleration track to a stop, pulling 40 Gs, gave a press conference. He said that their good safety record on the project was due to a firm belief in Murphy's Law and in the necessity to try and circumvent it.
Aerospace manufacturers picked it up and used it widely in their ads during the next few months, and soon it was being quoted in many news and magazine articles. Murphy's Law was born. The Northrop project manager, George E. Nichols, had a few laws of his own. Nichols' Fourth Law says, "Avoid any action with an unacceptable outcome."

The doctor, well-known Col. John P. Stapp, had a paradox: Stapp's Ironical Paradox, which says, "The universal aptitude for ineptitude makes any human accomplishment an incredible miracle."
Nichols is still around. At NASA's Jet Propulsion Lab in Pasadena, he's the quality control manager for the Viking project to send an unmanned spacecraft to Mars.

Permaculture

Permaculture is a kind design system based on ethicsa nd design principles can be used to establish, design, manage and improve all efforts made by individuals, households and communities towards a sustainable future. According to David Holmgren, these concepts are adapted from Permaculture Principless and Pathways Beyond Sustainability. We can make the transition into a world of less available energy, making our local communities more resilient to the converging issues by adopting the Permaculture.

According to Wikipedia, Permaculture is an approach to designing human settlements and agricultural systems that are modeled on the relationships found in natural ecologies. It  is sustainable land use design. This is based on ecological and biological principles, often using patterns that occur in nature to maximise effect and minimise work. Permaculture aims to create stable, productive systems that provide for human needs, harmoniously integrating the land with its inhabitants.
 the

Principles of permaculture are draw heavily on the practical application of ecological theory to analyze the characteristics and potential relationships between design elements.

Each element of a design is carefully analyzed in terms of its needs, outputs, and properties. For example chickens need water, moderated microclimate and food, producing meat, eggs, and feathers as well as manure which can help break up hardsoil hardpan.

Design elements are then assembled in relation to one another so that the products of one element feed the needs of adjacent elements. Synergy between design elements is achieved while minimizing waste and the demand for human labor or energy. Exemplary permaculture designs evolve over time, and can become extremely complex mosaics of conventional and inventive cultural systems that produce a high density of food and materials with minimal input.

While techniques and cultural systems are freely borrowed from organic agriculture, sustainable forestry, horticulture, agroforestry, and the land management systems of indigenous peoples, permaculture's fundamental contribution to the field of ecological design is the development of a concise set of broadly applicable organizing principles that can be transferred through a brief intensive training.

A interesting song to let u more easily understand what is Permaculture

NAVIGATION DESIGN

Navigation Board in Putrajaya Sentral
PIC 1
PIC 2

PIC 3

This is a navigation board of Putrajaya Sentral. It is a bus terminal, usually you can see a lot of travelers, international students and workers in Putrajaya Sentral. You can take bus, taxi, or KLIA Transit from Putrajaya Sentral to the place that you want. Other that, there also have some shops there, for people to pass the time when they are waiting for their bus or KLIA Transit.

As we can see, all the navigation broads in Putrajaya Sentral are using Malay and English language and icons of the place to guide people go to the place they want, example like the counter of KLIA transit, shops, information counter and so on. By using 2 types of languages, so that the travelers from other country can easily understand where they should go and would not get lose in Putrajaya Sentral. Even though some people cannot understand both languages they also can follow the icon of the place they want.
According to the PIC 1, that is a navigation board at Putrajaya Sentral G floor. We have to turn left to reach the KLIA Transit counter , taxi counter, toilets, information counter, shops, front door, park and ride but if you familiar with the Putrajaya Sentral you can use the escalators that you can see in the picture to reach this few place. That is faster way for people to go to the KLIA Transit counter, toilets, shops, and information counter. That is a weakness for this navigation board, because we have to sake for the travelers and the students they were back from their home town. They have to bring a lot of baggage so it is not suitable for them to detour.

Now let us see the navigation board in first floor of Putrajaya Sentral, distance of the navigation board A that we see in PIC 2 is quite near with the next navigation board, Navigation board B, so that people will not fidget about where they are and they also can get to their place faster. If you go straight on u will see the navigation board B (PIC 3) and you can already saw some shops and KLIA Transit counter and information counter are round there.

Study of Assignment 2--- Exhibition Design

This is Sony exhibition as we can see they have Laser light irradiate on the wall
